Berber Women Summary

Berber women are a very unique group of people. They are both physically and mentally strong. They are capable of doing many tasks like raising the children, cooking, weaving and labor work without whining. They are very loyal to their family and love their kids and husband, also, they may be very obedient to their husband.

A part of Berber women’s identity, is their clothing, and their jewelry. They wear casual clothes during normal time at home but wear kaftans during big occasions or when they go out and wear colorful skirts and blouses when in the fields. For Jewelry, they wear the hand of Fatima, bracelets, thick silver chains, earrings rings, and pins. Also Henna is very important to them so they can become beautiful.

Most Berber women don’t go to school (60%) but many of them know how to read and write in the Tifinagh language. During celebrations, the women dance a lot with the drummers and sway around a fire that is lit in the middle.

Why keep Berber Women? Once a Berber man quoted “Women are the ridge pole of a tent” So what I can conclude from that is the Berber women are what keep their family in a good relationship, stable and happy as well as a working family. Without them and their strength, the family will fall apart.

Berbers

When I visited the Berber villages in the high atlas near Mount Toubkal, I discovered many interesting information. Once, instead of hiking on the mountains, we rode on mules and this experience taught me that riding mules is a very hard daily chores for both young and old males. Not only must they be coordinated and trained well to ride them, they must raise the mules. While I lived among the Berbers for 4 days I have experienced both very hot and cold temperatures so to live in a Berber village, you must be adapted to different temperatures. Both the young and old have very little leisure time because they must work 24/7 to earn the money to live. While the girls stay home and do their daily chores for the family, the boys go out and do the labor work such as farming, helping the irrigation system and selling.

The origins of the Berbers are unknown till this day but there are many theories of where they may have come from. They currently live in mountains situated in the Maghreb and are separated from the city civilization. They are mostly Muslims and not that rich, some Berbers migrate to the big cities to find a job and raise money to give back to their families. There are different seasons in berber farms such as the one we arrived in which was walnut season.

Living in Morocco

Living in Morocco is fun and annoying sometimes, however I am proud to be Moroccan because Moroccans have generosity in their bloods. Also, they care about their family and friends like no other people do. Also. The national sport here is soccer and I love soccer. However, it may be annoying here because Morocco is not that developed in modern times. For example, there is no fun amusement parks, no Burger Kings etc.... But I think Morocco will develop those and become the greatest place in the world.If you are poor and live in Morocco, now that is bad because its boring.

Introduction the Founder

My name is Ali and I come from and old family whose origins trace back to the Berbers. I was born in Meknes and my family lives in Sidi Kacem but I live in Rabat. I study in an American School and made many friends. My future goals will to be a soccer player and then become a doctor or lawyer. I have two brothers, one lives in Canada Montreal and my older one lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

Welcome to my Blog- Berbers in Morocco

During my five day trip to southern Marrakech, I learned a little bit about Berber daily life, culture, food, traditions, and celebrations. The source of this knowledge was from the guide and the people that live there. My class and I, lived in berber homes, ate berber food and did berber chores and I can tell you that it is hard. We went during theh arvest walnut season therefore we learned much about walnuts. Also, we studied about food and what they eat and how to make it. All in all, I think berbers have a difficult life but extract the most fun of it. Then, during the Moroccan Studies course we will learn about berber origins, customs, traditions, dynasties, tribes, and other topics.
