Berber Women Summary

Berber women are a very unique group of people. They are both physically and mentally strong. They are capable of doing many tasks like raising the children, cooking, weaving and labor work without whining. They are very loyal to their family and love their kids and husband, also, they may be very obedient to their husband.

A part of Berber women’s identity, is their clothing, and their jewelry. They wear casual clothes during normal time at home but wear kaftans during big occasions or when they go out and wear colorful skirts and blouses when in the fields. For Jewelry, they wear the hand of Fatima, bracelets, thick silver chains, earrings rings, and pins. Also Henna is very important to them so they can become beautiful.

Most Berber women don’t go to school (60%) but many of them know how to read and write in the Tifinagh language. During celebrations, the women dance a lot with the drummers and sway around a fire that is lit in the middle.

Why keep Berber Women? Once a Berber man quoted “Women are the ridge pole of a tent” So what I can conclude from that is the Berber women are what keep their family in a good relationship, stable and happy as well as a working family. Without them and their strength, the family will fall apart.

  1. During your presentation, I was surprised that berber women can do that much work. I also realized that berber women are different than women from Rabat. In contrast of women in Rabat, they have to stop education early and learn how to cook. They stay the whole day in the house. They also wear different clothing and different jewelry. I agree that berber women are significant and essential for their familly.

Q: You said that the majority of the women did not go to school but that many knew how to read and write in the Tifinagh language. So where and how did they learn it if it obviously wasn't from school? And I am guessing that since the mom is a women she probably didn't go to school too so she is probably not the one who tought them.
